Is honesty always the best policy?

Some time last month after moving I went out for lunch with my uncle. While reversing into a parking spot I scuffed the SUV next to me. When I finished getting out of my car to examine the damage I noticed a few scuffs. So, I placed a note in the windshield and went on to enjoy my lunch. Being very hopeful I was so glad I was in the clear....then my cell phone rang night and a unfamilar phone number was displaying across the screen. If that wasn't enough Coming to America 'Soul Glow' chimmed in lettng me know a voicemail had been deposited.

After the estimations, the damage done was $631.27! Now, if you were in my shoes what would you have done? Would you leave the scene? Or would you leave a note too?

R*E*S*P*E*C*T

What more can a person ask for? As we get closer to 2010 I'm re-evaluating my acquaintanceships and friends because some relationships need to be sheded like reptilia skin and others need to be embraced as they have met the 3T's. Tried, Tested and True. As you approach the New Year you should reflect and re-evaluate your relationships. Don't take with you unnecessary burdens into the New Year. Even better, into a new day. I try my best to practice not letting the sun go down on my wrath. Whatever angers me that day I do my best to resolve it or voice my anger in a undisrespectful manner (even when I think it's warranted). At the end of the day we all have our own opinions and you never truely understand where someones coming from. We don't always see the big picture sometimes it's just a glimpse.

Video Phone Remix Beyonce & Lady Gaga!

Check it out and let me know what you think?

By the way LOVE B's boots and fierce outfits! On the other hand Lady Gaga was very subdued! Not what I expected...almost disappointed. If the walls could talk.

Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart

This song speaks volumes in my life. How do you sleep with a broken heart? Especially, from friends and family who have unexpectedly passed, to failed relationships, unachieved expectations or undesirable results, to broken promises. I've cried, and cried and for some reason thought that my tears would some how mend my heart back together but I've learned it's life and what doesn't kill you will only make you stronger. Just be patient and give time time. It's at times like these when you're to put your trust in God. This is when your walk in the sand becomes one set of footprints instead of two. Who, What, When, Why and How have you tried to sleep with a broken heart?

Dating tips from the First Lady Michelle Obama!

I'm a young single professional woman and at time get caught up in my career that I lose sight of the fact that I'm getting older and this is the 'ideal' time for courting. You read right-Courting! It's interesting I tend to sacrifice a lot of my personal time in order to be successful. Should there not be balance between the two?

The pressures I receive from my family is astonishing! My grandmother would like to see my get married and have children before she dies. I love my grandmother but she is a broken record in my ear every week I just want to say to her ' Leave me alone! It's enough pressure as it is!' Ones career shouldn't fall short because I'm not dedicating 110% of my time to it. Is there really such thing as balance?

I'm the third wheel when going out with my friends, I'm always invited to my friends children's birthday party's and no child to bring. I have more godchildren then I do children (side note: I delight in the fact that I can send them back home). Although, the opposite can be said this is the slight I'm choosing in this situation. I feel like I'm getting to that crossroad where I have to choose between my career or getting married and starting a family. However, I can't do the latter because I've been out of the dating circuit (is that what you call it?) for soooo long that I wouldn't know what to do? Where to look? How do you know if he's the right person? And lastly, should I be looking for a husband or just a friend? Aren't we taught that we should marry our bestfriend?

While searching (yep!) and browsing (samething?) I came across some hope for us single young professional woman. Now, brace yourself...right now she has the catch of a lifetime. So, I ask again, what characteristiscs should a young woman look for when dating? Well, take a look at what Michelle Obama shares. I hope it enlightens you as it did me. Maybe there is a glimmer of hope.

L.A.M.B

I have to admit that Gwen has not had an off season when it comes to her fashion label L.A.M.B shoes. With each passing season I admire her work more and more. This season my 'Tickle me Fancy' selection is Jenner. Jenner would be the finishing touch with a pair of skinny's, a pencil skirt or if you're daring a cocktail dress! And yes, I personified the shoes. These boots were definately made for walking! For a quick bio on L.A.M.B see below:

The celebrity fashion line from Gwen Stefani is influenced by a variety of fashion cultures and her heritage, as she is from a line of seamstresses. The line manufactures clothing, shoes, handbags, fashion accessories and a fragrance named 'L'. The line was founded in 2003 but didn't hit the runways until 2004. Since then there has been no turning back and each season she seems to hit the ball out of the park! The name of the line comes from Gwen Stefani's debut album Love.Angel.Music.Baby released back in 2004.

Real Hair

I read this blog entry and found it extremely amusing. I'm siding with Joy, hair to me is an accessory. I believe in weaves, wigs and cornrows and I'm not afraid to let anyone know. After all I paid for it! My friends have joined the real hair saga (that's what I'm gonna call it) and trying to get me to join.....not now!

However, please read Joy's entry:
As the threads of the grown-out tracks were being snipped, I broke out my laptop and began my ritualistic daily web search. I go from news of the day to articles/blogs about the news of the day, ending up on entertainment/gossip/fashion stuff. But that day, something caught my attention and trumped all of the glowing reviews of President Obama’s health care speech: It was Tyra’s hair. National Real Hair Day? I missed that one…In fact, on National Real Hair Day, I was calling Extensions Plus in L.A. to make sure they had enough of the 20” “relaxed roots” texture hair that I love oh so much (and that keeps selling out like crazy!), and making an appointment to get my hair, I mean, my weave, hooked up. So Tyra, while I didn’t take part in your observance, I just want to say: “WOW!” You are such a brave woman for breaking the chains that bound you since your teenage years! What courage that took, for you to expose yourself to millions of people! Such fearlessness! Oh, how I wish I had the guts to do that. I guess I’m much too much of an insecure, self-loathing Negro for all that self-acceptance foolishness. I’m glad we got down to solving the mystery of what’s under your lace-front, though. I mean seriously, it was “THE” question that has perplexed the world over. And now we see that there’s a beautiful head of hair underneath it all, hair that was surprisingly relaxed and ready for the world. Whodathunkit?! If I had the same length and fullness of hair that you have, I might take my weave out too. Ha!!!! I’m just playing! Even if I DID have your “real” hair, I’d still be wearing a few tracks or clip-ons up in there. Why? Because I’m straight weave fo life, kid!!! Ima ride ride wit this weave, die die with this weave!! Let me break it down for you: See, I loooooove taking new hair out of the bag, combing through it with my fingers, holding it up with my two hands, and burying my face in it. Mmmm, mmmm, mmm! Nothing like a new batch of zig-zag curly to get your self esteem out of the dumps! The feeling of getting my hair, I mean, my weave done over. I feel human again. I feel sexy. I feel powerful. It makes me feel…it makes me feel…it makes feel like a natural woman!!! I can be whatever, whoever I want to be with the stroke of a sewing needle… With long brown tresses and a tan, I’m Pocahontas, ’cause I got Indian in my family. With easy waves, I AM bohemian rhapsody goddess personified. And now that I got blond highlights! What!? I know I look like Beyonce! You can’t tell me nothing! Uh oh, uh oh… And then I looked up from my computer, and caught a glimpse in the mirror of my head minus the long weavy locks. I looked crazy! Awww hell naw! I looked over at the new batch of hair sitting off to the side waiting to join forces with me. Damnit, I’m trapped, I thought to myself. I can’t let it go. I am powerless over it. Just when I think I’m done, it pulls me back in! Now I guess I can get help for my self-loathing addiction. I can learn to accept myself in my entirety. I can emancipate myself from that which keeps me locked-up. I can embrace the natural state of things. Yup, I can do all of that… But don’t hold your breath! Hi, my name is Joy, and I’m a weave-a-holic.

Muscle Car

So, I pull up to the Burger King drive-thru right before I start my journey to Walden Galleria and there's a customer before me. They place their order and drive up to the window. I'm really intrigued with this car, but I can't find the make and model on the back. Anyways, I place my order and the car is now about to pay at the window. This car must be really special because it's at least a good 3 feet from the window and the attendant has hop up and stretch half her body out the window to as far as she can go. Then the drivers arm stretches the other distance and I'm shocked beyond disbelief. Her arm is saggy, wrinkly and very old. The transaction is complete and I pull up and say " I guess she's trying to re-live her younger days!" while the drive-thru attendant is crying with laughter. Korean Grill House

My friend's girl is leaving to go back to St. Louis on tuesday and she wanted to go out for dinner, so we chose to go to the Korean Grill House. The concept is great! You are seated at a table where you have a circular grill in the middle of your for the buffet.
The buffet consists of a raw items menu with option a; chicken, beef, pork, ox tongue, ox liver fish fillet and squid. Option b is the above along with shrimp and lamb. I enjoyed the experience! It's well priced, a great conversation starter, and you may learn earlier on if your date can cook!

Home Hunting!

Home hunting! Who knew it could be so hard? I've tried just about everything so that I could get what I want (a story I'll blog in series) but I've learned that everything happens for a reason. I can't wait for the day I say 'Home Sweet Home!' I've searched on the internet, through newspapers, on bus stop panels and still no avail! I've even gone ahead of myself and bought things to put into my home. I have colour schemes, and furniture ideas picked out. All I need is a place to call my home or my own.

A day in the x-ray clinic

Today I went to the x-ray clinic and it resembled a mini bus. All the office needed was windows there was so much commotion and chaos. After wards I was shown my change room and this man and I were given some instructions. Clearly the technicians assistant was not specific enough for this man. The man's instructions went something like this " Remove all your clothes except for your underwear and put the gown on and wait to be brought to the room." Clarke Kent came out of the change room and the technician's assistant didn't have the heart to clarify. I had to turn around to giggle.

Cut out Boots

While drinking a glass of Arbor Mist White Zinfandel and I know it's not the most refined sparkly but it's one of my all time faves. I was collecting the latest styles of shoes I like on my favorite sites for Your Right to Shoes my Facebook group when I stumbled across this. Yeah I'm calling it.....

TREND ALERT:

Yes, it's summer and the cut out boot seems to be the next accessory to rock. So make sure that you have yours to flaunt before the season is out. And if your flaunting them wear them well!

Man in the Mirror

Two thousand and Mine the year of Change!

I originally started this entry with a different slant and as I got closer to completion I chose a different spin. Two thousand and nine has been and will forever be a monumental year. The time line began on January 20, 2009 with a pinnacle. The inauguration of the 44th President of The United States of America Barack Obama, the First Blackresident. Unfortunately, six months later on June 25, 2009 it incurred a pit, the death of the King of Pop- Michael Jackson. Both with one common thread- Change.

Michael Jackson was an undeniable talent, he dedicated his life to doing what he loved and that was entertaining. He never buried his talent he honed it. He used it to break down barriers, inform others, and shed light on parts of the world that was treated as nonexistent. Michael Jackson was a son, a mentor, a humanitarian, a father but most of all he was someone who took a look in the mirror and realized that change started with him.

It seems like President Obama too has taken a look in the mirror. Both have challenged us to change, to be an example by starting with ourselves. Obama is setting milestones, creating challenges and leading by example. What more can the world expect? What more could they want from one person? We need to realize that it takes a community to raise a child.

Have you looked in the mirror?

Father's vs Dad's

Any man that procreates is a Father whether you are present or absent in the child's life. But it takes a real man to be a Dad.

I was talking with a friend and we were discussing Fathers day and I was asked "Where is your father?" I said he's present but not present. I wanted to elaborate to the extent of saying that when I see his phone number on caller display I make it go to voicemail. My friend on the other hand has never seen their father, but in some situations I'm not sure who's worst off.

Ironically, the relatives I know best and consider my adoptive parents are his sister's and their husbands and to them I'm forever indebted. My two uncles are father figures or should I say dad figures that have showed me that there still are "Good Men" in this world. These are men that have driven to Buffalo to pick up their stranded niece from the airport when she ill planned her spring break holiday in Miami with 8 of her friends and couldn't get home. Who accepted her with open arms when she was down and out and saw no light at the end of the tunnel and she moved herself into his home without asking- for four years. Who said I was smarter then I thought and signed me up for summer school math because he wasn't accepting a high sixties grade as acceptable and said "I told you so!" when I came home with a ninety-five on my report card. Who when she wanted to go to post secondary school and couldn't afford the monthly payments said we'd pay them for you while you get your education. I'm talking about an excellent chef sharing his tips and secret recipes to prepare me for when I leave the nest. They say "The way to a man's heart is through his belly" and if I plan on touching his heart I need to know how to throw down. My man needs to know that when I cook it's to touch his heart and make his toes curl. LOL!!!

My uncles have been charged with a lot. They have had to accept a child that's not theirs nor their wife's. They have taken their wife's niece and accepted and loved her as if she was their own. These are the only father figures that friends, acquaintances or co-workers know. I may smile like my father, place my index finger on my nose like my father but these are all hereditary traits. I don't know much about him and vice versa. My father could never tell you what my favorite food, colour, tv show, movie or singer is. He could never tell you which school I went to, what sport I played, or who my first boyfriend was and how he broke my heart. My father, is just that I call my uncle's dad's.

If you're a father understand your responsibilities, take pride in your children as they are a gift from God. Ask your self, do I know my child's favorite tv show, colour, friends, or what it's like to stay up all night when they're sick? Instead of being a donor, take the necessary time to commit to get to know the life you helped create. After all, this should be the most important job in your life. You would have helped your child become a loving, well adjusted person who will have a role model to look up to and parenting traits to pass down.

After all, isn't that what being a dad is all about?

My Struggle, My Triumph!

I'm starting a series of inspirational stories. Here's my first. Meet Amanda Lane and this is HeR*sTorY:
Well, I struggled with weight my whole life and it's true you need to be mentally, physically and emotionally ready to break any cycle, to kick any addiction. I have tried many different diets in the past including Jenny Craig but failed many times. Finally in March of 2008 I decided to grab the bull by the horns, it was now my time! When I set to start my new life I weighted in at 258lbs. I began with regimen with the aid of Jenny Craig. I learned and adapted to their portion control methods of weight loss. I also learned to how not to lead into temptation and cravings. This is very vital. However, indulging into the occasional 'bad' food makes you sane and not feel deprived. Take out is great! In the first four months of my decision I also started to exercise. I would go to the gym like crazy at minimum 5 days a week. I was motivated and took advantage of that time. I had lost 40lbs in my first 4 months. My motivation my best friends wedding set for July and I was to be her Maid of Honour. But after that first milestone my gym days started to dwindle. I tried to compensate with doing home videos and tried to get at least 3 days a week at the gym. However, my eating habits didn't really change. I was still able to keep with my 6 portion controlled meals per day along with my out of control meals over the weekend. I did have bad weeks like I assume anyone who's tried to kick a habit has, but the most important thing about it is to get back on that horse. And so I did! By January 2009 I had lost in total 62lbs and very proud. Unfortunately, although I had accomplished a remarkable amount of weight loss in January I had also encountered some family situation that had just discouraged me to even go to the gym. I found it next to impossible to return but I never ditched my new eating habits. It's now June 2009 I'm 91lbs healthier and counting. Now the only worries I have is my loose skin. You have to remember that while you are losing your weight it's not just for vanity reasons. I can honestly say that I'm happier, and confident. I'm learning that life consists more then sitting on the couch and eating. I got out of a 6 year relationship which was going now where and although people may say it's due to the new me, I can reply and say I don't believe I was truly happy. My new found confidence has allowed me to meet new people, which I found hard when I was heavier. It has also made me more energetic actually a LOT more energetic! I've realized that I LOVE to SHOP!! Food can become a bad addiction just like drugs. You need to recognize that it can become an enemy and over indulging your kryptonite. Remember time is of the essence, don't rush it. Take it one day at a time. It's hard to over come but once you take that first step and make it over that hill it's a hell of an accomplishment. I did it and so can YOU!!!

I am NOW an ASTONISHING 167lbs!!!!

06 June 2009

Hey Mon!!!

My friends refer to me as 'Hey Mon'. I know you remember the skit from In Living Colour the Jamacian family with five, six, seven jobs. Yeah that's me! I'm always on the grind. Like today hard at work. I work harder then hard working!

Product of October

October's own is causing chaos amongst the record labels. Our own homegrown bidding tag about 2 milli! Will he be picked up by Universal the home of Wezzy's Young Money label? Or will it be Jay Z's Warner Bros or even the unnamed label? Only time will tell. He said it himself " I just want to be, I just want to be SUCCESSFUL!!!"

Kudos!
